As I write this message, I have just returned from the successful conclusion of the fifth annual Cornell International Real Estate Case Competition. I want to congratulate the Cornell team which placed third overall, but also acknowledge the student competitors from all fourteen teams for their excellent effort. Teams have traveled from as far as China and the UK to compete in this event each year....see more.

Chartres Lodging Group Capital Markets Lab

We celebrated the grand opening of the Chartres Lodging Group Capital Markets Lab on Nov. 8. Rob Kline ’84, CEO and co-founder of Chartres Lodging Group, and Denise Kline provided a generous gift to fund this learning center where students will build greater literacy in financial and capital markets...see more.

Faculty Honors and Recognition

The Chicago Quantitative Alliance (CQA) has awarded Qingzhong Ma, assistant professor of finance, the first-place prize for his paper, "Momentum and Insider Trading."

Pamela Moulton, assistant professor of finance, was named to present at the Financial Management Association Annual Meeting in Chicago in October. Her paper, titled “Institutional Holding Periods,” was co-authored with Bidisha Chakrabarty and Charles Trzcinka...see more.

Minor in Real Estate

Undergraduate Real Estate Minor Continues to Grow
The undergraduate real estate minor has become a part of the intellectual fabric of Cornell University, especially given the fact that 340 students from all seven of Cornell’s undergraduate colleges and schools have declared the minor. We anticipate that 150 students will graduate from the program in June 2014, according to minor coordinator Jan deRoos, the HVS Valuation Professor of Hotel Finance and Real Estate...see more.

Graduate Minor in Real Estate Gains Traction
SHA faculty in the Graduate Field in Real Estate approved a re-launch of the Graduate Minor in Real Estate at Cornell in the fall 2013 semester. The minor is an option for graduate students enrolled in any college at Cornell. The requirements for completion of this graduate minor involve satisfactory completion of 15 hours in three required courses and two electives. During academic year 2012-13 eight students were granted the graduate minor in real estate. This academic year 25 students have filed an application to be considered for the minor and another 30 have indicated an interest.

Inaugural CREF Webcast Highlights Realities of Asian Real Estate Investment

The first in a series of CREF webcasts focused on the current status of real estate investment in Asia, including methods for investing, the status of capital markets, and how to deal with political instability. Real Estate Career Day 2013
The CREF and the Career Management Office welcomed representatives of 26 companies to campus in October 2013. Some 300 students attended and scheduled 200 interviews as part of the event.

REMAC Connects Alumni to Students in Mentoring Program

The Real Estate Minor Alumni of Cornell (REMAC) has initiated a mentoring program that connects recent graduates to current students in the undergraduate real estate minor. Composed of students who have graduated with the minor in real estate, REMAC holds regular meetings in New York City and Chicago...see more.
