From the Director

It is hard for me to believe that it has been four years since the official launch of the CREF, and that my service as academic director is coming to an end. We launched with nine CREF Industry Fellows and a small graduating class in the spring of 2009. We now have 27 Industry Fellows, over 350 students in the minor, a world renowned real estate faculty, and a record of accomplishment...see more.

Student Involvement

Cornell Students Earn High Marks in 2013 HAMA Competition
Two student teams from Cornell were invited to present their papers at the annual Hospitality Asset Managers Association (HAMA) convention as part of the HAMA Student Competition Award, which recognizes the best entries from Cornell University and Michigan State University based on annual topics defined by HAMA...see more.

Amy Yao ’13 Wins WX Scholarship
New York Women Executives in Real Estate, WX, has named Amy Yao ’13 as a winner of one of its WX Scholarships for 2013. WX New York Women Executives in Real Estate is an invitation-only association of executive-level women actively engaged in the commercial real estate industry in New York...see more.

Real Estate Minor News
On May 26, 101 students graduated with the Minor in Real Estate, joining the 312 alumni who graduated starting with the inaugural class from the Spring 2009 term. The Minor has grown to become the largest undergraduate minor at Cornell University; we have 255 continuing students in the minor who look forward to joining their colleagues as alumni over the next two years. Congratulations to the recent graduates and to all of our alumni on being part of the CREF’s growth and maturity.

CREF Faculty Maintain Strong Publications Stream

The Spring 2013 semester has been a busy one for CREF faculty publications, both through Cornell channels and in academic journals. Recent papers include "Common Global and Local Drivers of RevPAR in Asian Cities," by Crocker Liu, Pamela Moulton, and Daniel Quan; "Preferences and Attitudes of Chinese Outbound Travelers," was co-authored by Peng (Peter) Liu, Qingqing Lin, Lingqiang Zhou, and Raj Chandnani ’95; and the continuing Cornell Real Estate Market Indices series. The faculty has also produced numerous working papers, all available on the CREF website.

Peng Liu Promoted to Associate Professor
We in the CREF are pleased and proud to have Peng (Peter) Liu join the ranks of the tenured faculty at Cornell. Peter earned his Ph.D. at Berkeley six years ago and has become an accomplished scholar during his six years here at the School of Hotel Administration and at Cornell...see more.

CREF’s New Industry Fellow

HVS has joined CREF as the newest Industry Fellow. The support of Industry Fellows is critical to the CREF’s success. HVS Principals Rod Clough and Suzanne Mellen will alternate on the CREF Advisory Board. Long a supporter of the School of Hotel Administration, HVS provides consulting services and solutions for thousands of clients in all 50 states and more than 60 foreign countries for hotels, mixed-use, shared ownership and leisure assets.

CREF Events

The CREF Industry Fellows Advisory Board met in New York City on June 4, 2013, in conjunction with the School's gala recognition of the Icon and Innovator of the Industry. The record attendance at the board meeting is testimony to the valuable support given to CREF by its Advisory Board members.

Three members of the real estate faculty were instrumental in the success of the recent, sold-out Cornell International Summit: Hospitality, Real Estate, and the Built Environment, held in Shanghai, China...see more.

HVS’s Rushmore Helps Students Build Industry Credentials
One of the founding principles of the Center for Real Estate and Finance is to augment students’ classroom studies by providing real-world training and experience. Stephen Rushmore, Jr. ’96 provides critical support for this effort twice per year, when he conducts the two-day HVS Valuation Seminar. Rushmore regularly returns to campus to lead the seminar, which gives both undergraduate and graduate students a first-hand understanding of the HVS Hotel Valuation Tool...see more.

Visiting Scholar Robert Nelson

Based at the University of Delaware, Robert Nelson ’83 has been a visiting scholar at the CREF during the Spring 2013 semester. Nelson, an associate professor who is the immediate past chair of the Department of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management at the University of Delaware, used his time effectively...see more.

Llenrock Blog Features Commentary by Jan deRoos

In conjunction with his presentation to the Philadelphia Real Estate Council and prompted by the case of Marriott International v. Eden Roc, CREF Academic Director Jan deRoos provided an analysis of the case for the Llenrock blog. The Eden Roc case is important as it involves an owner’s ability to unilaterally terminate a hotel management contract with an operator, even though the manager is specifically not the owner’s agent...see more.

SHA Alumni Give Back with Support of CREF Programs

Uwe Christiansen ‘75 SHA Discretionary Fund
After graduation, Uwe Christiansen became a VP, project development, with the largest club operator in Asia and was involved mostly in the development of golf and country club operations and boutique hotels. He then moved on to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, becoming Executive Advisor with a strategy consulting firm, where he worked with clients in Oman and other Persian Gulf states...see more.

The “Kline Lab”
Rob Kline, CEO and co-founder of Chartres Lodging Group, and his family have endowed The Robert '84 & Denise Kline Family Real Estate Capital Markets Lab, which will operate in conjunction with the School’s Binenkorb Center. When students return to campus in Fall 2013, this state-of-the-art facility will be available for both course work and research projects...see more.
