From the Director

As CIHLER finished its first 18 months of operations, we are happy to report a number of accomplishments. First, we now have 23 partners who are providing leadership, guidance, and content in the form of updates on cutting edge issues. As described more fully in this newsletter, since last March we have held our annual HR in Hospitality Conference in April in Las Vegas, a webinar with our partner Kara Maciel in June, and the 13th Annual Labor & Employment Roundtable in September...see more.

Report Focuses on Advantages of Arbitration for Employers and Employees
Both employers and employees can be well served by arbitration when it comes to addressing workplace issues, according to a new report from the Cornell Institute for Hospitality Labor and Employment Relations (CIHLER) and the Center for Hospitality Research (CHR). Center academic director David Sherwyn, who is a professor of law at the School of Hotel Administration, contributed a guest post to the “OnLabor” blog. He examined a recent decision by the National Labor Relations Board that declared McDonald’s is a joint employer with its franchisees...see more.

CIHLER Associate Director Quoted in Time on “Big Mac” Decision
Time magazine’s analysis of the NLRB ruling included a comment from Richard Hurd, professor and associate dean for external relations at the ILR School, and associate director of the center. The ruling involves the relationship between McDonald’s and its franchisees with regard to who is the employer...see more.

CIHLER Represented at Georgetown Law Continuing Legal Education Session
Center director David Sherwyn was the moderator in November of a Continuing Legal Education Panel at the Hotel and Lodging Legal Summit at Georgetown Law School. The panel examined the legal aspects of union organizing through card-check neutrality agreements...see more.

Sherwyn Is Special Guest in Tip-related Roundtable and Webinar
CIHLER director David Sherwyn joined attorneys from the firm of Epstein Becker Green, which hosted a roundtable and webinar on “Strategies for Tip and Service Charge Compliance for the Hospitality Industry.” Epstein Becker Green is a national law firm serving clients in such industries as health care, financial services, retail, hospitality, and technology...see more.

SHA Update

Register for Free Online Course in Global Hospitality Management
The hospitality industry employs one in eleven people worldwide and boasts growth well over double that of global GDP, making hospitality management a red-hot opportunity for those with the desire, ambition, and keen interest in the business of service to make a career of it. In February, SHA will offer a free six-week MOOC (massive open online course) titled Introduction to Global Hospitality Management, led by four members of SHA’s renowned faculty and featuring veteran industry experts.
